The Secretary of State serves as Nebraska’s chief election officer. Working with election officials in the state’s 93 counties, the Elections Division oversees election law, the conduct of elections in the state, election tabulation equipment and the state voter registration system. The division accepts candidate filings and compiles results for statewide, legislative, judicial retention and certain district elections. The division oversees filings for statewide initiative and referendum petitions.

Dates & Deadlines

04/06/2026 - Deadline to have early voting ballots ready for delivery by mail in counties who do not hold elections entirely by mail.

04/13/2026 - Deadline to have early voting ballots ready to be voted in office.

04/27/2026

  • Postmark deadline for mailed-in registrations.
  • At 6 PM- last day for deputy registrars to register voters for an upcoming election.
  • Prior to midnight, last day voter registrations can be completed online for the person to be registered to vote for the upcoming election.
  • At close of business, last day voter registrations can be completed at DMV for the person to be registered to vote in an upcoming election.
  • At close of business, last day voter registrations can be completed at or returned to the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services for the person to be registered to vote in an upcoming election.
  • Last day for voter registration form to be delivered to the election office by someone other than the person registering to vote, for the person to be registered to vote in an upcoming election.
  • Last day to mail an early voting ballot with a mail-in registration application form to a person who has requested an early voting ballot but is not registered to vote.

05/01/2026

  • At 5 PM - last day for write-in candidate to file notarized affidavit and filing fee with the filing officer or to withdraw a previously filed write-in affidavit.
  • At 6 PM - last day for in-person voter registration.
  • At 6 PM - last day to receive an application for early voting ballots to be mailed out to a specific address.
  • At 6 PM - last day to submit a request for a replacement ballot to be mailed.
  • At 6 PM - last day for a voter with a religious objection to being photographed to notify the county clerk or election commissioner to add a notation to the poll book indicating such religious objection.
