The Secretary of State serves as Nebraska’s Chief Protocol Officer for international relations. In that role, the Secretary serves as a goodwill ambassador and promotes commerce, educational studies and cultural exchanges between Nebraska and the world as directed by Nebraska State Statute 84-502:
"In coordination with the Governor, the Department of Economic Development, the Department of Agriculture, and other interested federal, state, and local officials, to actively seek appropriate contacts with other officials in nations with which the state has or desires to have active trade, cultural, or educational relations; and to help facilitate the interchange of ideas and contacts for betterment of commerce, cultural exchange, or educational studies between such nations and the state."
The office’s goal is to develop contacts and expertise to connect Nebraska with the international community.
