Private Detectives

License Renewal for 2022-2024

Private Detective licenses expire on June 30, 2022. On April 13, 2022, emails were sent out with the required materials to renew your application. To ensure that you receive your 2022-2024 license prior to June 30th, please submit your completed application no later than June 1st. 


If you are licensed as a Private Detective, an email was sent to your email address of record.


If you are a licensed Private Detective Agency, an email was sent to your email address of record with the renewal application for your agency and for each of your Plain Clothes Investigators. Please distribute the PCI renewal applications to your Investigators, have them returned to you for submission, and submit them back to us along with your PDA renewal application.


If you are a licensed Plain Clothes Investigator, your renewal application was sent to your Private Detective Agency. They should distribute the renewal application to you and you should return it to them upon completion.

Requirements for Licensing



Rules and Regulations

An application for private detective, private detective agency, or plain clothes investigator must be requested from the Licensing Division. Requirements for these licenses can found here. Please note that prior to issuance of each license, the Nebraska State Patrol will conduct an investigation on the character and reputation of each individual applying for a license. The investigation may take up to 90 days to complete.

Interested applicants must complete the application for any license and meet all of the minimum requirements prior to taking the examination. The testing of all eligible applicants is held on the third Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. at the our office location: 1201 N. Street, Suite 120, Lincoln, Nebraska. Applicants who are interested in taking the test should contact the Licensing Division at (402) 471-8606 prior to taking the examination.
