Private Detectives

Licensing will be open to the public by appointment only, resuming Thursday, July 16, 2020.  Appointments may be scheduled by contacting our office by email at sos.licensing@nebraska.gov or by telephone at 402-471-8606. 

Masks are requested for appointments.  If you don't have a mask, we can provide one to you. The office drop box, email and phone, are also available to assist with your Licensing needs.  Please view the email confirmation you receive, after scheduling an appointment, for additional information.  Once you arrive for a scheduled appointment please wait in your vehicle or outside the office, we will call you when we are ready for you to enter the office.  Please bring all necessary paperwork and payment to the appointment.  If you are unsure what information you need to bring or have questions please contact the office at 402-471-8606 or email at sos.licensing@nebraska.gov.

If you have been exposed to COVID-19 or are experiencing any symptoms please cancel the appointment.  Appointments are for a maximum of 25 minutes and available every half hour between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Appointments will end promptly after 25 minutes out of courtesy to the next customer and to keep appointments on time.

An application for private detective, private detective agency, or plain clothes investigator must be requested from the Licensing Division. Requirements for these licenses can found here. Please note that prior to issuance of each license, the Nebraska State Patrol will conduct an investigation on the character and reputation of each individual applying for a license. The investigation may take up to 90 days to complete.

Interested applicants must complete the application for any license and meet all of the minimum requirements prior to taking the examination. The testing of all eligible applicants is held on the third Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. at the our office location: 1201 N. Street, Suite 120, Lincoln, Nebraska. Applicants who are interested in taking the test should contact the Licensing Division at (402) 471-2385 prior to taking the examination.
