Elections Division

 

The Secretary of State serves as Nebraska’s chief election officer. Working with election officials in the state’s 93 counties, the Elections Division oversees election law, the conduct of elections in the state, election tabulation equipment and the state voter registration system. The division accepts candidate filings and compiles results for statewide, legislative, judicial retention and certain district elections. The division oversees filings for statewide initiative and referendum petitions.

Dates & Deadlines
11/4/2024

  • Last day for early voting - in person - at the county clerk or election commissioner office.
  • First day the Early Voting Counting Board may convene to begin counting early voting ballots.

11/5/2024

  • 8 AM CT (7 AM MT) - Polls open.
  • 7 PM CT (6 PM MT) - Deadline for agent to pick up early voting ballot.
  • 8 PM CT (7 PM MT) - Deadline for return of voter registration form with an early voting ballot - in person.
  • 8 PM CT (7 PM MT) - Deadline for obtaining a replacement ballot - in person.
  • 8 PM CT (7 PM MT) - Deadline for return of early voting ballot - in person.
  • 8 PM CT (7 PM MT) - Deadline for an early voting ballot received by mail to be in the possession of the clerk or commissioner.
  • 8 PM CT (7 PM MT) - Polls close.
  • 8 PM CT (7 PM MT) - The first time any returns or partial returns may be released.

11/12/2024

  • Deadline to present valid photographic identification to the election commissioner or county clerk by a voter without a reasonable impediment who failed to present valid photographic identification at the time of voting.

12/2/2024

  • At 1 PM - Board of State Canvassers meets to certify the election results.

12/4/2024

  • At 9 AM - the time to conduct recounts for candidates who filed with the Secretary of State.

12/5/2024

  • Deadline to complete general election voter history.
  • Last day the copy of a petition may be served on the person whose election is being contested when contesting the election of Constitutional Officers, and members of the Public Service Commission, Board of Regents and State Board of Education.
  • Last day the copy of a petition may be served on the Secretary of State contesting the election of constitutional amendment or statutes by initiative or referendum.

12/16/2024

  • Last day for petition to be filed in Lancaster County District Court contesting the election of Constitutional Officers, and members of the Public Service Commission, Board of Regents and State Board of Education.
  • Last day for petition to be filed in Lancaster County District Court contesting the election of constitutional amendment or statutes by initiative or referendum.
  • Last day to deliver certificates of nomination or certificates of election.
